Dragonflies Perform a High-Speed "Dunk and Spin" to Beat the Heat

Dragonflies are already among nature's most agile fliers, capable of aerial maneuvers that make fighter pilots jealous. But in 2025, researchers documented something even more extraordinary: a split-second "dunk and spin" routine the insects use to cool down — so fast that most people who spend time near ponds have never seen it.

What They Found #

Researchers at Imperial College London, led by biomechanist Huai-Ti Lin, trained high-speed cameras on 10 dragonfly species in Taiwan. What they captured was remarkable. Roughly once every 10 minutes, a dragonfly dives into the water, fully submerging its body. Then, as it takes off vertically, it flicks its abdomen backward — a motion that sends it tumbling head-over-heels in a series of forward somersaults, spinning at up to 2,000 revolutions per minute. For reference, most washing machines max out around 1,600 rpm.

The purpose of the dive is straightforward: cooling. Dragonfly wing muscles generate enormous heat during flight and can quickly reach temperatures that are lethal, or at least hot enough to cause failure. The water acts as a rapid heat sink.

The somersaults, meanwhile, are a clever byproduct of getting dry. When a dragonfly whips its tail to fling water off its body, the force naturally tumbles it forward. The researchers confirmed this by recreating the behavior in synthetic dragonfly models — the physics checks out.

Just How Much Faster Is Water Cooling? #

The team quantified the difference by implanting temperature-sensitive wires into dragonflies' muscles. When heated, an insect moved to the shade took 5 to 10 minutes to return to normal temperature. A dunk in the water? About 90 seconds. That's 3 to 6 times faster than shade — a meaningful advantage when every minute away from your territory risks losing it to a rival.

A Risky Maneuver #

The downside is real. Postdoc Alexandra Yarger reported that roughly one in every four dragonflies eventually drowns attempting the maneuver. It's a calculated gamble: risk drowning now, or risk overheating and losing your territory — and your chance to mate — by retreating to the shade.

The behavior is so widespread across dragonfly species that researchers believe it's likely very ancient. As one biologist not involved in the study put it, it "underscores the real and constant danger of overheating that insects face when they spend most of the daytime in active flight."

Something Truly Unique #

As far as scientists can tell, this is the only multi-revolution flight maneuver performed by any flying animal. No bird, bat, or other insect is known to somersault repeatedly in midair as a functional behavior. It's a reminder that even in a world we think we've catalogued, animals we see every summer are doing things we've never noticed.
