The Archaeology of the Silk Road's Lost Cities

For most of history, the Silk Road has been told as a story of lowland empires, valley cities, and the merchants who traveled between them. The mountains were just obstacles. Then in October 2024, a team of archaeologists published something in Nature that overturned that whole story. They found two lost medieval cities in the high mountains of Uzbekistan, one of them a 300-acre iron-smelting metropolis that had been hiding in plain sight for a thousand years.


The Cities That Shouldn't Exist #

The sites are called Tugunbulak and Tashbulak, sitting at 2,000 to 2,200 meters (6,600-7,200 feet) above sea level in the Malguzar Mountains of southeastern Uzbekistan. That's comparable to Machu Picchu. At that elevation, winters are brutal, the air is thin, and nothing grows well. By conventional archaeological logic, nobody should have built a major city there.

But they did.

Tugunbulak is the bigger find. It sprawls across 120 hectares (300 acres) and includes five watchtowers linked by walls along the ridgelines, a central fortress, and an industrial-scale iron smelting operation. Excavators found kilns, iron slag, and juniper charcoal, the fuel that fired the furnaces. Radiocarbon dating puts the oldest level at roughly 550 CE, right as the Turkic Empire was expanding. Three miles away, Tashbulak is smaller but still substantial, with pottery and architecture showing early Islamic influence.

The discovery was made possible by drone-based LIDAR, which fired laser pulses through the terrain to reveal walls, towers, and plazas buried under centuries of erosion. The technology has been used to find Maya cities under jungle canopies, but this was its first major application in Central Asian highlands. The Iron Hypothesis #

The big question is how these cities sustained themselves. The answer seems to be iron. The mountains are rich in iron ore, and the region's dense juniper forests provided charcoal for smelting. The researchers think the cities were positioned to harness strong mountain winds to drive furnace fires, a clever bit of pre-industrial engineering.

Coins from across modern Uzbekistan have been found at Tugunbulak, suggesting it was a trade hub, not just a mining camp. And at Tashbulak, a cemetery holds the remains of women, elderly people, and infants, meaning these were real communities, not temporary work camps. The team also believes Tugunbulak may be the long-lost city of Marsmanda, mentioned in 10th-century Arab sources as an iron-producing city "where the rivers froze" where monthly fairs were held. If that identification holds, it's one of the few times a lost city has been matched to a historical text using remote sensing.


What It Means #

The discovery challenges a major assumption about the Silk Road. The pastoralists of the Central Asian highlands have been cast as marginal outsiders, barbarian horse-riders who raided the civilized lowlands. Tugunbulak and Tashbulak suggest something different: these mountain populations built complex urban centers, ran industrial-scale metallurgy, and were part of the trade network, not just bystanders to it.

There's also a darker angle. The scale of iron production may have been the cities' undoing. The juniper forests that fueled the furnaces were eventually cut down, leading to deforestation, flash floods, and avalanches. The cities were abandoned by the 11th century, possibly because they'd consumed the very resource that made them viable.


Why This Matters #

The lost cities of the Silk Road's highlands change who we think was part of the medieval world's most famous trade network. The mountain people weren't bandits or bystanders. They ran iron foundries, built cities at 7,000 feet, and traded across Central Asia. The LIDAR technology that found these two cities will almost certainly find more.
