The Volcano That Buried Pompeii Is Still Alive. 670,000 People Live in Its Shadow.

The last time Mount Vesuvius erupted was March 1944. It killed 26 people, displaced nearly 12,000, and rained rocks the size of basketballs over the towns of San Sebastiano and Massa di Somma, all while Allied troops were fighting their way up Italy in WWII. Then it went quiet. It has been quiet for 82 years, the longest stretch of silence since the centuries-long repose that ended in 1631.

Here is the part that tends to get lost in the tourist photos: the mountain is not extinct. It is a live volcano, deeply asleep, and 670,000 people live in its mapped red zone, with roughly 4 million more within 30 kilometers of the crater. And directly inside that red zone sits the town of Pompei, whose main industry is the ruined Roman city the same volcano buried in nineteen hours, nineteen and a half centuries earlier.

The city the volcano buried #

Pompeii, the ancient one, was not a provincial backwater. It was an Oscan town founded in the 8th century BC that grew through Greek, Etruscan, and Samnite layers before Rome took it in 80 BC and made it a colony. By the time Vesuvius blew, it had roughly 11,000 to 20,000 residents (scholars disagree, newer household-count estimates lean low), surrounded by 3 km of walls, with its own forum, amphitheater, and an economy built on wine, the fish sauce called garum, and textile dyeing. The surviving evidence of daily life is the whole point of the place. We can tell you what people ate at the street-side snack bars because a thermopolium excavated in 2019 still had food residues that matched its counter paintings: duck, swine, goat, fish, land snails.

The 79 AD eruption is the reason we know any of this. It started around noon with a towering plume that Pliny the Younger, watching from across the bay, later described as shaped like a pine tree. The event carries his name, we call that kind of eruption Plinian, because his two letters to Tacitus are the only eyewitness account we have. For about 18 hours the volcano rained pumice on Pompeii, up to 2.8 meters of it, collapsing roofs across the city. That was survivable if you stayed put long enough. Then came the pyroclastic surges: fast, ground-hugging clouds of superheated gas and ash, at 250 to 600 degrees Celsius, that deflated on the city and killed people in under two minutes, even indoors.

Recent science has revised how we understand those deaths. For a long time the story was suffocation. The current consensus from volcanic and anthropological analysis is heat: the contorted poses of the victims are not the struggle of asphyxiation but what happens to muscle in the instant of intense heat shock. About 1,150 bodies have been recovered. The commonly quoted 2,000 dead in Pompeii is an estimate, not a body count, and the true number, including people who fled into the countryside and died there, is unknowable. A 2026 find at the Porta Stabia necropolis showed two men who died at different points in the eruption, one early, one at the final lethal surge, the first hard evidence the pumice phase itself could kill you.

The town that grew on top of it #

Pompeii stayed buried for almost seventeen centuries. Rediscovery came in 1748, when a Spanish military engineer started digging at a site the locals called La Civita, initially mistaking it for the city of Stabiae. Early excavation was treasure hunting, royal agents stripping frescoes and statues for the Bourbon court. The systematic era began with Giuseppe Fiorelli in the 1860s, who introduced the region-numbering system still in use and, in 1863, poured plaster into the voids left by decomposed bodies to create the famous casts.

The site has been through near-death experiences of its own. In November 2010 a building called the House of the Gladiators collapsed outright, a PR disaster that forced a decade of restoration. The Great Pompeii Project, largely bankrolled with 105 million euros of EU money, wrapped up in 2023 after restoring 70 buildings and making the ruins stable enough for 4 million visitors a year. That visitor flood is itself a new problem: in November 2024 the park capped daily admissions at 20,000 and switched to personalized, non-transferable tickets to stop the crowds from damaging the place. Tickets now cost 20 euros for entry, 30 for the full three day pass.

The last several years have been the most productive in modern memory. A private bathhouse uncovered in early 2025 in excavation Regio IX is probably the largest thermal complex ever found in a private residence, complete with a plunge pool sized for 20 to 30 people and a boiler room fitted with what look like modern valves. Its owners were mid-renovation when the volcano hit. In the same block, archaeologists found a woman curled on a bed clutching gold and silver coins and pearl earrings, and, in a cramped room nearby, a younger man with worn bones who may have been an enslaved servant, killed when a wall collapsed on him. A ceremonial four-wheeled chariot, unique in Italy, emerged from a suburban villa in 2021. The "Room of the Slaves" at that same villa, discovered that year, is a small, undecorated space with three wooden beds, one child-sized, and a wooden chest of horse-harness parts. It is one of the few places we can see how the people who kept a wealthy villa running actually lived.

Around a third of the ancient city is still buried, deliberately, under modern Pompei. Conservationists have decided the unexcavated two thirds are safer underground than exposed to weather and tourists, and they are probably right. Modern Pompei, which has slightly under 24,000 residents and is a separate, much younger town founded around a Catholic shrine in the late 19th century, literally sits on top of it.

The mountain, and what is underneath it #

Vesuvius is not a simple cone. It is a stack: an older, larger volcano called Monte Somma whose summit collapsed into a caldera, and the newer Vesuvius cone growing inside that crater. Its magma is potassic and silica-undersaturated, a chemistry that produces the violent, gas-rich Plinian explosions rather than the runny shield flows of Hawaii. It has done this kind of thing before. The four big Plinian eruptions in the last 20,000 years include not just 79 AD but an event about 3,900 years ago that devastated the surrounding plain and is considered the archetype worst case. In between came the 472 AD eruption whose ash reached Constantinople, and the 1631 eruption, still the deadliest in modern history, which killed at least 3,000 and possibly twice that and ended a repose of roughly 500 years.

That pattern is what makes the current quiet period so carefully watched. Historically, long sleeps at Vesuvius have ended in violence. Beneath the cone, seismic tomography shows a deep magma reservoir whose top sits at about 8 kilometers, holding roughly 30 cubic kilometers of fluid. The shallow chambers that feed actual eruptions form closer to the surface, between 4 and 7.5 kilometers, and they appear to be getting shallower over geological time, from about 16 kilometers deep 20,000 years ago to around 3 kilometers by 1944.

What the instruments say right now #

As of this writing, Vesuvius is on green alert, the lowest level, confirmed by the Italian civil protection agency, the national volcanology institute INGV, and the Smithsonian's global volcano program. The monitoring data through spring 2026 is a picture of a volcano that is quietly going about the business of being a volcano and nothing more. Around 100 small earthquakes a month, the strongest at magnitude 1.7 in recent readings, all shallower than a kilometer, centered at the crater. No ground swelling; if anything the upper cone is slowly subsiding a few millimeters a year, which is the opposite of the inflation that precedes an eruption. The crater vents emit low temperature steam, around 95 degrees Celsius, with no detectable sulfur dioxide, which volcanologists read as a sign the deep magma is not moving up. The hydrothermal system has been slowly declining for years.

It is monitored as intensely as any volcano on Earth. Eighteen seismic stations, fourteen GPS stations, borehole tiltmeters, thermal cameras, drones, continuous gas and soil CO2 sensors, satellite radar. There is even a public real time earthquake feed. If this mountain starts to wake up, the likely opening move is days to weeks of increasing seismicity and ground deformation, the pattern reconstructed from the 1631 eruption, which showed two to three weeks of buildup and a sharp seismic ramp in the final eight days.

Italy has a plan for that. The red zone, the area vulnerable to pyroclastic flows, covers 25 municipalities and about 670,000 people, including parts of Naples' eastern districts and the town of Pompei. The national plan assumes a 1631-scale sub-Plinian event, not a 79 AD-class cataclysm, and calls for evacuating the whole red zone in 72 hours once an alarm is declared, by bus, train, and ship to twinned regions across the country. Exercises are held regularly, most recently in 2024, complete with a cell-phone-based emergency alert test.

There is a real and unresolved scientific argument about whether that plan can work, because it depends on the volcano giving warning, and precursors are not reliable. The strongest earthquake at Vesuvius since 1944, a magnitude 3.6 in October 1999, changed none of the monitored gas, temperature, or deformation parameters. INGV itself lists precursor identification as a partially unsolved problem, and a long line of volcanologists, including Giuseppe Luongo and the team behind a 2020 study, have argued that confidently forecasting an eruption weeks out is not something the science can actually deliver, which leaves decision-makers in an impossible spot: evacuate 670,000 people on thin evidence, or wait and risk being too late.

So there is a strange symmetry. The most studied catastrophe in history, the ancient eruption that preserved a whole city, happened because a volcano with a long repose woke up without reliable warning. The town that excavates and profits from that catastrophe now sits in the crosshairs of the same mountain, on a plan that assumes warning it cannot guarantee. The ruins are in better shape than they have been in fifty years. The mountain is being watched more closely than any volcano in history. Whether that is enough, nobody can honestly tell you, and that is the part of the story worth keeping in mind the next time someone calls Vesuvius a dormant mountain you can comfortably photograph from the guesthouse in the red zone.
